Visitor in the 18th century galleries

May 2011

In the Pre-Raphaelite gallery, preparations for our Ford Madox Brown exhibition are underway. Half of this gallery has been rehung, with Millais's The Flood making a welcome return to display. The theme of modern life is represented by the later Victorian work Hard Times 1885 by Hubert von Herkomer. Ford Madox Brown's Work is currently undergoing conservation work before reappearing in the Ford Madox Brown exhibition from Saturday 24 September 2011.

If you are coming to see a particular work, please always remember to telephone in advance to check if it is on display.

Modern galleries

Visitor in the modern and contemporary galleries
In Gallery 16 there is a selection of works purchased through the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme from which the Gallery benefited from 1998-2004. This scheme was supported with funds from the Arts Council Lottery and Manchester City Galleries Corporate Patrons. With one exception, all are on display at the Gallery for the first time.

They include Object that fell from the White Cliffs of Dover by Cheshire-born artist and Turner Prize finalist Cornelia Parker; 3 images of sea creatures by internationally renowned British artist Craigie Horsfield from his Irresponsible Drawings series of 2003; a surreal photographic collage by British sculptor Richard Deacon; a colour photograph by Welsh-born Peter Fraser who was short-listed for the Citybank photography prize in 2004: and a ceramic work by celebrated German artist Thomas Schutte whose architectural model was installed on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, last year.
