A celebration of the creativity of Manchester, from the city's 200 year old textile industry to today’s thriving contemporary art and design scene.

Manchester has a proud history of art and design and a vibrant contemporary art scene. This ground floor display introduces you to the work of local talent spanning 200 years. Works by famous artists like LS Lowry and Adolphe Valette are shown with exhibits by contemporary artists and designers, as well as objects created by local communities.
Themes such as Pride, Attitude and Making it highlight how creativity is woven into the fabric of the city. See how views of the city have changed over the years, and encounter surprising combinations of furniture, textiles, graphics and wallpapers all made in Manchester. Cotton, once pivotal to Manchester’s economy, has its own section. There is also a special focus on Ancoats, the first industrial suburb in the world where Manchester’s pressed glass industry once flourished.
Like the city, the Manchester Gallery never stays the same. Different displays, from ceramics and furniture to photography and video, are incorporated each year, so come back and see something new.
