The project aims to identify ways in which museums can support young people to develop their talents so that they become active in the the creative economy as adults. The project is led by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in partnership with Action for Children, the children's charity, and five regional museums and galleries, of which Manchester Art Gallery is one. It builds on the strengths of the Image & Identity project and is funded under the same scheme.
During 2008-09 Manchester Art Gallery worked with young people from M13 Youth Project, CAFRASS (Children and Families Refugee and Asylum Seeker Service, Manchester City Council) and ASSFAM (Action for Children, Salford Assisted Families Project). Young people worked with designers and other creative practitioners to explore works from the design collections at Manchester Art Gallery. They learned about design processes and created their own design work.
More Design For Life projects will be happening during 2009-10 and will involve young people from Action for Children groups, CAFRASS and Parrs Wood High School.
