Telling Fortunes: New work by Alice Kettle
15 September – 24 December 2010
Alice Kettle’s work is concerned with stitch, and she creates figurative pieces which often portray stories and thoughts. Inspired by the Gallery of Costume’s collections, including gloves and embroidery, she has made her own piece of work in response.
New installations by three Manchester-based artists between March and September 2010
Christine Evans
Christine’s work is all about the line. Experimenting with drawing, printing and constructing, she works on and off the page to explore all things linear. For this work, the repetitive action of domestic crotchet led to twelve miles of line forming a three dimensional drawing.
Annie Harrison
Annie’s recent focus has been the urbanisation of Manchester and the social impact of the Industrial Revolution. This installation is the result of her research into the workhouse system; the bed sheets are a metaphor and a memorial to the people who passed through the workhouse.
Susie MacMurray
Constructed from black nappa leather and around 100,000 silver adamantine straight pins, Widow is the fourth in a series of garment sculptures by acclaimed artist Susie MacMurray, exploring aspects of female identity and vulnerability.
