Frames are vital to our experience of pictures and how we view the images they contain but they often go unnoticed as we are drawn to what’s within them. This talk will explore the hidden stories of frames focusing on 19th Century examples from our collections including those designed by artists. As part of the talk you will be given the chance to see some examples from our collections in store.

Friday 5 October 2012, 1 – 3pm
Curator Fiona Corridan will lead a tour of the exhibition followed by a chance to hear Britain’s best known paper artist, Rob Ryan, in conversation. Ryan creates intricate cut-paper works which have been transferred to limited edition prints, ceramics, fabrics and other surfaces. He has also produced a series of books and album covers and has collaborated with Paul Smith, Liberty, Fortnum and Mason and Vogue amongst others. For The First Cut Rob will create his largest paper-cut to date. Rob will be signing his books after the event.

This practical event gives you the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes to our art store with curator Rebecca Milner to view and discuss rarely seen works from our collection by early 20th Century European artists. After this you will to take part in an interesting and engaging practical art class based around some of these works. Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. Session led by artist and lecturer Paul Brotherton.
